Police checks on Jižní Spojce in Prague, foil theft, and fines of ten thousand crowns
© AKTU.cz, Jiří Forman During the night from Friday to Saturday on the Barrandov Bridge in Prague, the police conducted a checkpoint focused on drivers. The focus was on enforcing traffic regulations, particularly concerning speeding and driving under the influence. The check was part of an increased effort to ensure road safety, a common practice during peak travel times such as holidays and festive periods. Officers were assisted by both the Customs Administration and the Prague Municipal Police's escort unit.
During the inspection, the police recorded several offenses, including speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. In the Czech Republic, there is zero tolerance for alcohol behind the wheel, meaning that any amount of alcohol in the blood is considered an offense. Penalties for driving under the influence are strict, including heavy fines, driving bans, and in extreme cases, imprisonment.
Over 70 police officers, along with several customs officers and municipal police, were present at the scene.
The police focused on suspicious vehicles, foreigners, vans, and even trucks. In one case, they stopped a Ukrainian van, and after a detailed inspection of all the luggage and the vehicle, the driver was forced to remove the film from the front windows. Additionally, since the vehicle was not registered in the Czech vehicle registry, he had to pay a fine of ten thousand crowns. A Porsche driver also had to remove the film from his car.
The operation was monitored from the air by a helicopter for several minutes.
"The checks also targeted taxi vehicles and other contractual carriers. Among these drivers, the police uncovered a large number of violations of the legal conditions required for operating contract transportation. In one case, they discovered that a driver was using a counterfeit driver's license," said police spokeswoman Eva Kropáčová.
A special unit of municipal police, responsible for taxi issues, was also on the scene. The patrol identified a taxi driver of Turkish origin who was under the influence of drugs. They also discovered several vehicles without valid technical inspections, and one driver's license plates were confiscated due to an outstanding debt with the city. Additionally, a foreigner of African descent was fined ten thousand crowns for not having any taxi driver documentation at all. In total, the team checked 74 taxi drivers.
Most of the drivers were from abroad. One of them, a citizen of Uzbekistan, had applied for asylum in the Czech Republic and was operating transportation without the necessary permits. Officers from the foreign police then detained a Belarusian in a Ukrainian car who lacked valid documents and a residence permit.
The customs service’s dog handler inspected the luggage and vehicles alongside his four-legged partners, searching for contraband such as weapons, cigarettes, and drugs.
During the operation, the police identified twelve individuals who were already under a nationwide search. For four individuals, arrest warrants were issued; for three, warrants were issued to bring them in to serve their sentences; for another three, a search for their whereabouts was initiated; and one person was reported as missing.
Four of the stopped drivers were under the influence of alcohol, with one of them refusing a test for narcotic and psychotropic substances.
Police checked a total of 1,303 people, including 452 foreigners, and inspected 1,008 vehicles. They recorded 250 offenses, resolving 198 of them on the spot, and collected fines totaling 219,500 crowns.
